Program Description

Head Start and Early Head Start are comprehensive child development programs that serve low income children from birth to age five, pregnant women, and their families.  While the primary focus of Head Start and Early Head Start is school preparedness for low income children, these programs take a holistic approach to issues of child development.

It has long been recognized that it is difficult for a child to succeed in school if he or she is hungry, sick, homeless, or abused.  Head Start and Early Head Start provide comprehensive case management and parenting support for the child’s family in an effort to counteract negative influences that might impede a child's ability to learn, thrive, and succeed in school.

Head Start staff also work with families to coordinate referrals to other resources and agencies in the community.  This approach has proven to provide significant long term gains for the children involved.

Lincoln Action Program recently celebrated 40 years of providing Head Start services to low-income children and their families.  This year, 644 children in Lancaster and Saunders counties will benefit from the programs provided through Head Start and Early Head Start.

Head Start serves children ages 3-5 years old and Early Head Start serves pregnant women, infants and toddlers.  For more information about these programs, to contact us,  or to print an application, please click any of the links below.
